John Ruffell has held senior management positions with high-tech companies in the USA and New Zealand and has consulted with market leading companies around the world in commercial applications of ion beam technology, particularly in semiconductor capital equipment. In 2004, he retired as Chief Technical Officer of the Ion Implantation Business Group at Applied Materials, Santa Clara, California, the world's largest semiconductor equipment company (US$11b sales), and continues to be very active with high-tech business interests and consulting, including UniServices since 2009.
John began his technical career in the AURA 1 Laboratory, Physics Department, University of Auckland, as a member of the team developing and building ion beam equipment for nuclear research. In 1965 this group founded ANAC Ltd., believed to be the first high-tech spin-out from the University of Auckland. ANAC later became the kernel for Buckley Systems Ltd., which today enjoys 80%+ worldwide market share in the manufacture of beam-line components for semiconductor ion implanters.
John holds a number of patents. He was born and educated in New Zealand and maintains close ties there, visiting frequently. He currently resides in California's Silicon Valley.
